INSTALLATION ON VIEW: TO CATCH THE LIGHT

A partnership project led by Tulsa Artist Fellow Elspeth Schulze featuring Tulsa Girls Art School. supported by Fab Lab Tulsa and Tulsa Artist Fellowship

Visit the Tulsa Girls Art School's Spring Show for a chance to view 'To Catch the light,' a collaborative window installation. Tulsa Artist Fellow Elspeth Schulze partnered with the Tulsa Girls Art School and Fab Lab Tulsa to lead a workshop for middle and high school girls on the basics of digital fabrication. During the workshop, students drew plant-based forms and learned to digitize these hand-drawn lines using open-source software. Students operated laser cutting machines to cut shapes out of sheets of colored acrylic and then assembled and installed the cut forms into a dynamic installation. Celebrate their work and view other Tulsa Girls Art School projects at the Spring Show!

Tulsa Girls Art School, a nonprofit located in Kendall Whittier, is an after-school art and youth development program that provides support and resources to over 75 at-promise girls annually — all at no cost to the girl or her family.

Students are chosen for enrollment based on their promise for future growth and success when provided with needed resources and community support. Girls can begin the program as early as third grade and continue through high school. Classes are available multiple times a week, and students are supported with transportation, healthy meals and snacks, art supplies, mentorship, and, importantly, a safe, consistent all-girl space where they are free to put themselves and their needs first. Two annual art shows help students learn business skills and financial awareness. 6th-11th-grade students receive 50% of their art sale proceeds. Seniors receive 100%. These funds are deposited into savings accounts to be used for the student’s future educational expenses.
