KALUP LINZY
Tulsa Artist Fellowship Alum-in-Residence
Kalup Linzy is an interdisciplinary artist whose expansive practice spans video, performance, painting, music, collage, sculpture, fashion, and collaborative forms. Born in Clermont, Florida, and raised in Stuckey, Florida, Linzy received his MFA from the University of South Florida and attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture.
For more than two decades, Linzy has developed an interconnected narrative universe populated by an evolving cast of fictional characters, family histories, romances, rivalries, and artistic ambitions. Best known for his long-running, soap opera-inspired videos and performances, he draws on the visual and narrative languages of television, melodrama, music, drag, and popular culture to explore identity, relationships, sexuality, family, cultural memory, and the contemporary art world. Linzy writes, directs, performs, and frequently creates the music, costumes, sets, and visual worlds surrounding these works.
His work has been presented at the Studio Museum in Harlem, MoMA PS1, Prospect.1 New Orleans, the Sundance Film Festival, Tribeca Film Festival, and numerous museums, galleries, and festivals internationally. His work is held in major public collections including the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Studio Museum in Harlem. Linzy has received support and recognition from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, Creative Capital, the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation, the Jerome Foundation, Art Matters, the New York Foundation for the Arts, and Headlands Center for the Arts, among others.
Linzy’s collaborative practice has included projects with artists and performers across contemporary art, film, and music. In 2010, he appeared on the ABC daytime drama General Hospital alongside James Franco in a storyline incorporating performance art. His ongoing screen-based projects include As Da Art World Might Turn and a broad constellation of related works through which characters move between video, performance, music, painting, and other media.
Since making Tulsa home, Linzy has increasingly extended his artistic practice beyond the individual artwork and into the creation of spaces for gathering, experimentation, mentorship, and exchange. In 2021, he founded Queen Rose Art House, a Tulsa-based project operating simultaneously as a public artwork, community art space, artist residency, site of artistic production, and Linzy’s home. Queen Rose extends the world-building central to his artistic practice into lived space, bringing artists and audiences together through exhibitions, performances, residencies, collaborations, and informal community.
A former Tulsa Artist Fellow and current Alum-in-Residence, Linzy remains an active part of the Fellowship’s studio and artistic community. In 2026, Tulsa Artist Fellowship presents Queen Rose: World Building at Untitled Art, Houston, bringing together painting, sculpture, film, digitally generated collage portraits, performance, music, fashion, and collaborative works in an expanded presentation of Linzy’s ongoing narrative practice. The presentation includes In My Feelings About It All, a performative fashion project bringing his fictional persona Katonya onto the runway through original garments, imagery, music, and live performance.
