WAKE: FILM SCREENING & CONVERSATION

WAKE: FILM SCREENING & CONVERSATION WITH JAY CARLON AND MICAELA TOBIN ON GRIEF, RITUAL AND TRANSFORMATION

SATURDAY, AUGUST 9, 2025

DOOR 7:00 PM | SCREENING 8:00 - 9:30 PM
Drifter’s, 1305 W Cameron St., Tulsa, OK, 74127

MATURE AUDIENCE

In 2024, WAKE was created to offer a refuge for queer, Asian, and BIPOC communities born in the wake of the U.S. Empire—a sanctuary of resilience and ritual in the shadows of nightlife. Premiering in Los Angeles in partnership with CAP UCLA, WAKE combined performative movement and sound in an immersive nine-round boxing match to grieve, heal, and find solace.

The creative team of WAKE—including dancer and choreographer Jay Carlon and sound artist Micaela Tobin—invite you to join them for an intimate film screening and conversation about the transformation of this work and the rebuilding of rituals following the recent loss of their dear friend and collaborator, láwû makuriye’nte.

THE DANCE FLOOR WILL HEAL YOU.

WAKE (Screening & Conversation) is made possible by NEFA/New England Foundation for the Arts and in part by Tulsa Artist Fellowship.

ABOUT PARTICIPANTS

Composer and sound artist Micaela Tobin wields her soprano voice against the confines of convention, specializing in experimental and contemporary realms of opera and noise. Micaela focuses on building connections between the physical voice and one’s "inner" voice as a means of empowerment, challenging colonial stories and systems. Integrating voice with electronics, ritualized gesture and amplified object-symbolism, she weaves dynamic music that is at once alluring and demanding. Micaela is a 2025-2027 Tulsa Artist Fellowship Awardee.

Jay Carlon (he/they) is a queer dance artist, choreographer and community organizer whose work is grounded in a collective journey toward decolonization and sustainability. Carlon grew up the youngest of 12 in a Filipino Catholic migrant family, on the Central Coast of California. His work facilitates collective healing and the exploration of post-colonial identity, ancestry, and the complex experience of queer and Filipinx communities in relationship to site and space.

Brian Sea is an independent creative producer of music, dance, and opera performance. Based in Los Angeles, he specializes in creating site-responsive work for unconventional spaces and developing projects through his company, Standard Stages. From grassroots to rooftops, he has presented work with Center for the Art of Performance UCLA, Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles (MOCA), Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions (LACE), The Industry, homeLA, Metro Arts, Los Angeles Performance Practice, and 2220 Arts and Archives.
